Ink stains

Ink stains are very unsightly, especially when the ink color contrasts with the carpet completely. Not to worry though; a mixture of milk and cornstarch can get the ink off the carpet. Mix the milk and cornstarch to form a paste, and then pour the paste of the stained area. Then, allow it to dry for a few hours. After its dry, you can brush it off and vacuum your carpet.

Coffee, tea and liquid foods

Spilling coffee and tea is quite common in the house. In case this happens, you can use a detergent vinegar solution to remove the stain. Blot the excess liquid with a dry towel then try and work from the outer edges of the stain inwards to prevent it from spreading out.

Add the final rinsing procedure after stain removal. Mix one part of vinegar to four parts of water, spray over the stained area and blot with an absorbent cloth until it is completely dry. You can use this procedure when most of the stain is cleared up by the detergent.

Fats, oils and wax

Grease and wax stains can be very stubborn once the substance gets into your carpet fibers. Always blot up the excess fat using dry paper towels. You can get the rest by placing a dry paper towel over the affected area and ironing with a warm iron. The wax or oil will stick on the paper towel.

Alternatively, you can sprinkle cornstarch over fat and oil stains and let it sit for a couple of hours. Once the cornstarch soaks up the stain, you can brush it off and finish with the vinegar rinse.

Red wine

You can clean up red wine using white wine and salt. Pour a little white wine over the red wine stain to dilute the colour and blot up the spot. Use a cold wet towel to work the stain just to clean out the remaining colour. Finish it off by sprinkling salt over the area and letting it sit for a couple of minutes. Salt is a very absorbent substance and it will soak up most of what is left over. You can vacuum the salt after ten minutes.
